Most conventional film histories dismiss the early 1960s as a fallow period, a downtime between the heights of the classic studio system and the rise of New Hollywood later in the decade. The movie industry seemed to be floundering as the popularity of television caused a downturn in cinema attendance. Cinema ’62: The Greatest Year at the Movies challenges these assumptions.

Boundary-pushing international films, emerging new American talent both behind and in front of the camera, and great late-period work from the surviving artists of the Hollywood studio era all combine to forge a monumental year for American moviegoers.
