The Cinema ’62 book tour (Covid-postponed from the original hardcover publication in 2020) resumes at long last with a special screening of the film classic To Kill a Mockingbird, the 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee’s beloved Pulitzer Prize novel, starring Gregory Peck (Best Actor Oscar winner). Long considered a film classic, its status was cemented by inclusion into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1994, and by its continuing popularity into the 21st century.
The film is equally beloved as the novel, primarily due to the faithful adaptation by playwright Horton Foote who won the Oscar for his screenplay, and foremost by the superb performance of Peck, whose portrayal of Atticus Fitch was named the #1 movie hero by the American Film Institute.
Appropriately, To Kill a Mockingbird screens in a fully restored 1920s movie theater, the Tivoli, part of the Classic Cinemas chain in suburban Chicagoland (Downers Grove, IL) on July 15 in partnership with the After Hours Film Society. Hosted by Michael McClellan, the co-author of Cinema ’62, with a book sale and signing after the screening.
